Fall Detection System
A fall detection system integrated into Mosa’s tiles, capable of detecting both human presence and falls.
Year :
2023
Project Duration :
5 months
Project Type :
Individual
Client :
Mosa Tiles

Problem :
In collaboration with Mosa, I explored the possibilities of integrating a fall and presence detection system into their tiles. Many elderly individuals experience difficulties alerting others after a fall, and this system aims to provide an effective way to automatically detect such incidents and notify someone for help.

Contribution :
I investigated various sensors to determine which could most effectively detect falls and conducted multiple iterations to improve detection accuracy. Based on this research process and its findings, I wrote my thesis documenting the development and evaluation of the system.
Solution :
The most reliable approach was found to be capacitive sensing, with a single sensor placed beneath each tile. When multiple sensors detected human presence simultaneously, it indicated that someone was lying on the floor. This low-cost sensor setup can be applied not only for fall detection but also for presence detection, floor mapping, and burglary alarms.
