Exchange in Japan

During this exchange, I experienced Japanese culture and design principles firsthand while living in Chiba near Tokyo for five months.

Year :

2025

Project Duration :

5 months

Project Type :

Individual

Client :

Chiba University

Japanese Language:

This exchange taught me a lot about the Japanese design approach and allowed me to immerse myself in the culture by learning the language. Through classes and conversations with Japanese students and friends, I learned to read, write, and speak Japanese at a beginner (A2) level. This enabled me to handle basic conversations such as ordering, asking for directions, and posing simple questions. It also gave me deeper insight into the politeness and social norms embedded in the Japanese language.

Japanese Culture:

By engaging with people from all over the world, attending lectures and workshops by Japanese designers, and visiting various places and exhibitions, I experienced the richness of Japanese culture, where respect and politeness play a central role. The people were warm and welcoming, and my curiosity for new experiences allowed me to gain deeper insight into Japanese culture, food, social norms, and design principles. Experiences that I can apply to shape my own behaviour and design vision.

Japanese Design:

During the semester, I immersed myself in Japanese design through courses such as graphic design, car design, media mix, and shape of verbs. These courses showed me how the Japanese focus on simplicity and intuition resulting in products that are both aesthetically refined and highly functional, and how their design is often guided by subtle meaning, restraint, and attention to detail. Where I can use these insights in my design identity.
